How Is a Broken Ankle Diagnosed?

There is no doubting what happens when a broken ankle occurs. This foot condition happens suddenly and is accompanied by extreme pain and discomfort. It is often difficult, if not impossible, to walk, and immediate medical attention is often sought for relief. The ankle is composed of three bones. The tibia is the large bone in the lower leg, referred to as the shinbone. The calf bone is called the fibula and is the smaller bone in the lower leg. The bone found between the heel bone, tibia, and fibula is known as the talus, and any of these bones can be fractured in the ankle. A diagnosis is often performed that can consist of having an X-ray taken, which successfully determines the severity of the injury. It is beneficial to keep weight off the foot as much as possible and wear a protective boot or cast. Many people use crutches to help provide mobility until the healing process has been completed. If you have broken your ankle, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can effectively treat this condition.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.

Dealing With High Ankle Sprains

Sprains are one of the most common ankle injuries, especially affecting athletes and people who are otherwise physically active. The majority of these injuries involve a lateral ligament in the ankle joint and are caused by the foot rolling over and a ligament overstretching. Another, more serious, ankle sprain is termed a syndesmotic, or high ankle, sprain. This involves the tissue in the front of the ankle, called the anterior tibiofibular ligament. Such an injury makes it impossible to walk or flex the foot and is extremely painful. In most cases, surgery is the only option for treatment and can involve months of staying off the injured foot. One of the main risks of incurring a syndesmotic ankle sprain is participating in high-impact sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and trail running. Other risks include having had a previous ankle sprain, being obese, and starting a sports activity after being sedentary for a long time. If you have such an ankle sprain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who will examine the joint, conduct multiple tests, and offer appropriate treatment options.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact one of our podiatrists from Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

How to Deal With a Stiff Ankle

A stiff and painful ankle is common after an ankle injury, such as an ankle sprain, fracture, or Achilles tendon tear. Stretching, mobilizing, and re-training can increase the mobility and functionality of the ankle. Patients are often put in a cast after an ankle injury, and while the immobilization helps with healing, it also creates swelling and inflammation. Dorsiflexion is important while walking and running, and occurs when the foot comes up towards the shin. This is one of the most frequent and limiting ranges of motion lost after an ankle problem. A quick, short-term option to relieve some of the stiffness is to wear shoes that have a heel or heel wedge. Longer term, it is suggested that you be under the care of a podiatrist who can help you with proper exercises and other relief options for stiff ankles.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Whether people shop for shoes in stores or online, the importance of getting the right shoe size is crucial in protecting the feet. Blisters and bunions may develop while wearing shoes that are too tight, and a loss of balance may happen if shoes that are worn are too large. The majority of shoe stores have an effective tool that can accurately measure shoe sizes, and this is referred to as a Brannock device. People who would prefer to measure their feet at home can stand on a sheet of paper while wearing the socks that are normally worn. This is followed by tracing the length and width of the foot, and the right shoe size can be determined by using a conversion chart. When it is time to purchase shoes, it is beneficial to try them on and walk in them for several minutes in the store. This can help to determine if there is adequate room in the toe area. If you would like more information about how to get your right shoe size, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who is an expert in matters of the feet.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. Seek the assistance of one of our podiatrists from Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors will provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people who wear shoes that are the incorrect size, negatively affecting their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process, so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to choosing the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot.
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently.
  • Purchase shoes later in the day, as your feet swell as the day progresses.
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat them right. Picking the right pair of shoes can provide your feet comfort and mobility without pain.
