Falling accidents may increase with age, and preventing falls and related foot injuries begins with strengthening exercises to improve leg and foot muscles, enhancing overall stability. Balance training helps maintain coordination and confidence while walking. Using a cane or walker can offer vital support, especially for those with limited mobility. Changing footwear to supportive, non-slip shoes greatly reduces the risk of slipping. It is also important to review medications that may cause dizziness or instability. A podiatrist can evaluate foot health, recommend appropriate devices, and create personalized care plans for seniors to improve balance and prevent falls. If you have endured a foot or ankle injury from falling, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions and guide you on effective fall prevention tips.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Managing Swelling in the Legs and Ankles

Leg and ankle swelling, also known as edema, can result from a variety of causes, including circulation problems, injury, prolonged sitting, or underlying health conditions. It may feel tight, heavy, or uncomfortable, and the skin can appear stretched or shiny. Simple steps like elevating the legs, wearing compression socks, and reducing salt intake can sometimes bring relief. However, persistent or worsening swelling may signal something more serious. Conditions such as vein disease, heart issues, or lymphatic problems can all contribute to fluid buildup in the lower limbs. Because untreated edema can lead to skin damage, discomfort, or infection, ongoing swelling should never be ignored. If you notice puffiness that does not improve or comes with other symptoms, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for an in-depth evaluation and the right course of treatment.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

Understanding Foot Pain in Children

Children may not always be able to explain what hurts, but changes in how they walk, run, or play can signal that something is wrong. Foot pain in children can come from several causes, including growth plate irritation, flat feet, or overuse from sports. Some may develop heel pain linked to rapid growth, while others may complain of aches in the arch or ball of the foot. Wearing ill-fitting shoes, tight muscles, or minor injuries can also lead to discomfort. Often, kids will try to avoid activities they once enjoyed or begin limping without a clear reason. Since early foot issues can affect development and posture, it is important not to overlook these signs. If your child is showing signs of foot discomfort or walking differently than usual, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist to determine what may be causing the issue, and how to best treat it.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

A plantar fibroma is a firm, noncancerous growth that develops within the arch of the foot in the plantar fascia tissue. It can cause discomfort or pain, especially when walking or standing. The exact cause is unknown, but it may be linked to genetics, foot trauma, or medical conditions, such as diabetes and epilepsy. Symptoms include a noticeable lump in the arch, tenderness, or a feeling of pressure when wearing shoes. Risk factors include repetitive foot strain and certain health conditions. A podiatrist can diagnose a plantar fibroma through examination and imaging, then provide treatment options such as orthotics. If you notice a lump in the arch of your foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for appropriate treatment solutions.

A plantar fibroma may disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Nola Sole Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Plantar Fibroma

A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot in the arch of the foot. It is embedded in the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. There can be multiple plantar fibromas in the feet at the same time. There are no known causes for this condition. If you have a plantar fibroma, there will be a bump in the arch of your foot that cannot be missed. Any associated pain is most often due to a shoe rubbing against the nodule. Non-surgical options, such as steroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics should be tried first. Surgery is a last resort and is the only thing that will remove a plantar fibroma entirely. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to determine the treatment regimen that is right for you.

What Causes a Plantar Fibroma?

While there are no specific causes identified, a plantar fibroma can possibly come from genetic predisposition or the formation of scar tissue that forms from healing the tears in the plantar fascia.

What Are the Symptoms of a Plantar Fibroma?

There will be a noticeable lump in the arch of the foot that may or may not cause pain. If pain is felt, it is typically because a shoe is rubbing up against the lump or when walking or standing barefoot.

Treatment and Prevention

A plantar fibroma will not disappear without treatment, but it can get smaller and be a non-issue. If pain persists, a podiatrist examines the foot and when the arch of the foot is pressed, pain can be felt down to the toes. An MRI or biopsy might be performed to help diagnose or evaluate the plantar fibroma. The following non-surgical options are generally enough to reduce the size and pain of these nodules:

  • Steroid injections
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy to help apply anti-inflammatory creams on the bump

Surgery is considered if the mass increases in size and the patient continues to feel pain after non-surgical methods are tried.

Key Information About Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet. The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes, public shower areas, and locker rooms. The infection spreads through direct contact with contaminated surfaces or skin. Symptoms include itching, burning, redness, and peeling skin, especially between the toes. The affected area may appear dry, flaky, or cracked, and can sometimes develop blisters or sores. The infection can cause discomfort and odor, if left untreated. A podiatrist can diagnose athlete’s foot by examining the feet and may take a skin scraping to confirm the fungus. Treatment usually involves antifungal creams or oral medications, along with recommendations to keep feet dry and wear breathable footwear. If you have developed athlete's foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Nola Sole Podiatry.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.
